![]() In this contribution, we provide a diagnosis for Chiniquodon omaruruensis, sp. The Namibian specimen was found in the uppermost levels of the upper Omingonde Formation and is represented by the skull and partial skeleton. Regarding cranial and dental morphology, body mass, and their possible relation with diet in non-mammaliaformĬhiniquodontidae is a family of Triassic carnivorous cynodonts well represented in the Middle–Upper Triassic of Argentina and Brazil and, more recently, discovered in Madagascar and central Namibia. Finally, palaeoecological working hypotheses Generalist diet, and the medium/large-sized traversodontids were herbivorous. The morphological variations in the skull and the different body sizes observedīetween traversodontids are interpreted as reflecting different types of diets where small-sized traversodontids had a Medium-sized traversodontids include adult Massetognathus pascuali with massesįrom 20 to 40 kg, and the adult forms of large-sized cynognathians like Cynognathus crateronotus and ExaeretodonĪrgentinus reached or surpassed 100 kg. Small traversodontids such as Andescynodon mendozensis and Pascualgnathus Geometric similarity using skull length wasĪpplied to provide an estimation of adult masses for species with only samples of juvenile and subadult limb bones.Ī broad body mass range was recorded. For this purpose, we used predictive formulas available in the literature based on variables onĪppendicular skeleton of different extant groups of mammals and reptiles. Union Basin located between San Juan and La Rioja provinces, and the Cuyo and San Rafael basins, both in Mendoza Of postcranial elements (humeri and femora) from 14 specimens from Triassic units of the Ischigualasto-Villa Here, we estimated the body mass of five species of NMC cynognathians by linear measurements and circumferences The Carolina Soil outcrop represents one of the few fossiliferous localities known for this AZ, which was only briefly mentioned in previous studies and has a great paleontological potential for future studies.īody mass estimations for extinct taxa are fundamental in palaeobiological reconstructions, but little work has beenĭone on this topic for non-mammaliaform cynodonts (NMC), the diverse and abundant Permo-Cretaceous forerunners of ![]() The traversodontid Santacruzodon remains an index taxon of the Santacruzodon Assemblage Zone and aspects of the knowledge of its anatomy are here improved. However, this chiniquodontid is poorly represented in this Assemblage Zone, in contrast with the older Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone. Although Chiniquodon co-occurs with Santacruzodon in the Schöenstatt outcrop, its presence is not biostratigraphically significant, as Chiniquodon has a large biochron and geographical distribution, and its phylogenetic distribution requires to be comprehensively explored. ![]() The new material improves our knowledge of the anatomy of Santacruzodon, which is based on relatively incomplete, small-sized specimens collected in the Schöenstatt outcrop (Santa Cruz do Sul Municipality). The site has yielded numerous specimens of the massetognathine traversodontid Santacruzodon hopsoni (Cynodontia: Gomphodontia) with a broad range of ontogenetic stages, and a new record of the chiniquodontid cynodont Chiniquodon sp. We describe the fossil content of the Carolina Soil outcrop in Vera Cruz Municipality (Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil), which represents one of the few localities with a conspicuous fossil record in the still poorly sampled Upper Triassic Santacruzodon Assemblage Zone (Santa Cruz Sequence, Santa Maria Supersequence).
